CHRISTMAS IN NEWPORT
Newport, RI is one of the most charming cities in New England any time of year. During the Christmas season, this historic city takes on an extra sparkle with a wonderful holiday spirit full of joy, giving and celebration.
Now in its 52nd year, Christmas in Newport is a month-long celebration focused on the noncommercial traditions of the holiday season. In keeping with the true spirit of the season, all these events are free of charge or must benefit a nonprofit institute or charity.

Among the highlights in 2022:
The famous Rosecliff Mansion on Bellevue Avenue is a centerpiece for holiday festivities. From November 23, 25-27, and November 29 – December 2, the Island Moving Company presents The Nutcracker at Rosecliff, featuring the Mouse King, Snow Queen and the Land of Sweets. Then on December 4, Newport Classical presents Handel’s iconic oratorio Messiah featuring the Choir School of Newport County. Join Newport for a boldly reimagined chamber version of the timeless classic, including the famous Hallelujah Chorus, surrounded by the splendor of the Rosecliff Mansion.
The Breakers Great Hall at Christmas
On December 4, A Colonial Christmas takes place at Whitehall Museum in Middletown, the home of 18th century Irish philosopher George Berkeley. Born in Kilkenny, Berkley spent several years in Rhode Island before returning to Ireland.
Newport Waterfront
On December 10, the Irish History Museum on Lower Thames Street holds a free open house, featuring caroling by the Ancient Order of Hibernian Men Singers. Visitors to the Museum learn about Irish immigration to Newport County from the 1600s to the present, and the contributions to Rhode Island by people of Irish descent, all while enjoying Celtic holiday music, eggnog and cookies.
And throughout the month, the Newport Library has various family activities such as A Winter Solstice Storytime, Kids Reindeer Games and a visit with Santa.
