CROSSING AMERICA IN A VW
Long popular in Boston for her lovely singing voice and sparkling personality, Marie Gallagher’s popularity has just exploded, thanks to her starring role in a Volkswagen ad airing nationally.
Set to Simon & Garfunkel’s song, “America,” Marie plays a widowed Irish grandmother taking her family on a cross-country trip in the new VW Atlas SUV. In real life, Marie is a widow with seven grandchildren.
“They were looking for someone over 70, with an Irish accent, fit as a fiddle,” the Roscommon native recalls. After acing auditions in Boston and New York City, “The producer called and said, ‘pack your bags, we have chosen you.’”
Marie spent 24 days driving cross-country, filming in seven states, until they reached the west coast. And now, she is the most popular Irish granny on TV.
